As a farmer, it is not an option to call in sick; the animals and farm need attending to.  As a farmer/business owner, it is not an option to call in sick; my community and staff need attending to.

As I continue on a day to day basis, working through the loss of my son Roy, I realized that we as a nation could probably use some advice on what can be done to alleviate the pain that we are all suffering in regards to COVID-19 and the losses that we are all having to deal with; for some the loss of a family member, friend, job, stability, etc…

On a physical level, increasing vitamin and mineral-rich foods and herbs that are high in antioxidants, C, E, anti-inflammatory, lung and respiratory specific.  Less is best, choosing and creating foods that are simple and nourishing.

Soups should be on everyone’s menu as they are easy to make,  nutritionally dense, freeze well, require minimal ingredients, and a great way to incorporate garlic, onions, and spices that will help boost immunity.

Finding Clarity

In order for the change in diet to work, however, we must maintain a level of mental clarity for it to be effective.  Our brains and stomachs are related; change one in a positive way the other will react in the same manner. The opposite is also true.

If I were to say treat one over the other in order that they are more compatible, it would be the mind. Getting the mind under control will make the stomachs’ job much easier. How we think is related to ego, while our stomachs better represent our second heart. The ego, for many, is what prevents us from truly seeing what is real. When out of balance, it convinces us through negative feelings and thoughts about what life is all about. So, as the saying goes, if you put your mind to it, you can create and achieve anything you want. “Mind over Matter”. It is the stomach (second heart), however, that is the convincer and controller of that destiny.  A balance must be had between the two, with the stomach and heart being a bit more in the first place.

In processing the loss of Roy, my mind was in charge for a very long time.  Sending me to that place of despair, anger, sadness, and remorse. It wasn’t until recently, that I realized by having all of these negative thoughts, I was forgetting all of the beauty that Roy brought into all of our lives.  His smile, laughter, loudness, spontaneity, love. This current pandemic is having that same effect on many people. Take a moment to look at all of the positive things in your lives; let those things rule how your day goes. If, like myself, you need a picture to look at as a reminder, do so. Mine is Roy in his yellow shirt sporting that unforgettable smile; kept in my cell phone case.

Some Herbal Support

A few of the top herbs of choice that I  have found effective in energizing and nourishing while also helping with the brain clarity processes are Rosemary, Burdock, Dandelion, and Nettles. These herbs can either be taken as a tincture, tea or added in soups and foods that you cook with. Within a matter of a few weeks, fresh dandelion and nettle greens should be available for ultimate nourishment.

Along with these herbs and high-density foods, I encourage all to get out in nature. Take time each day to be quiet with no external stimulus, meditate, journal, yoga, craft and most importantly turn off devices for at least 4 hours during the day; especially while eating.

In the meantime, spring has arrived, days are getting longer, the goats and sheep have been lambing and kidding, Mackenzie, staff and I are working hard to keep them all healthy and we are all looking forward to warm days when the gardens and grounds at the farm begin their rebirth; bringing bounties in food and medicine for our family and surrounding communities.

Stay safe and healthy.
