As the seasons change, it becomes cooler and the days get shorter I find myself spending more of my time reading, researching and creating new tonics and elixirs in my apothecary. Mostly just for myself and to test out new ideas with the ingredients I have on hand.
This week on “my day off” I was reading through one of my favorite magazine subscriptions, The Herb Quarterly, and came across a great article regarding Cardamom. Every quarter the magazine does a pantry profile piece focusing on a kitchen staple and the list of benefits the herb or spice has while using it in cooking or making herbals, as well as the history and so on.
I have recently been incorporating Cardamom into my new favorite afternoon beverage pick-me-up, recipe below, so I was intrigued to learn more. Cardamom for many is simply known as a staple in savory Indian cuisine and is commonly found spicing delicious curries and meats. However, “The Queen of Spices”, as it is historically named is also a staple in a sweet treat we are all familiar with, chai tea or lattes!
Cardamom is the third most expensive spice and originates from India, Bhutan, and Nepal. It is high in vitamins, manganese, iron, magnesium, and potassium. Has antispasmodic characteristics and is a phenomenal remedy for calming digestive issues, nausea and stomach pain.
The article goes on looking into the history and additional medicinal of Cardamom and I would suggest picking it up for a great read. I, of course, finished the article and proceeded to try the recipe that Herb Quarterly provided. I’ve listed two options for you to try out. The Recipe From Herb Quarterly
8oz oz of milk of choice
1 cinnamon stick
3 cardamom pods or 1/4 tsp ground cardamom
2 TBls unsweetened Cocoa
1 tsp vanilla
1 Tbls maple syrup or honey
1 tsp coconut oil
Pinch of ginger – optional
In a small saucepan, over low heat, warm the first three ingredients until it comes to a simmer. Add the remaining ingredients and whisk. Turn heat down and simmer for about 5 minutes. Remove from heat, strain, and enjoy!
In a small saucepan bring all ingredients to a light simmer. Pour into a blender or use a hand blender and blend until frothy! Option to add a shot of espresso 🙂 or whip cream and shaved chocolate for an extra, fun treat.
